Nick P Mastos

Nick P. Mastos, 91, of Sarasota FL, passed Tuesday, February 2, 2021. He was born in Altoona, Pa son of the late Pete and Vada Mastos. Nick graduated from Altoona High school in 1948, enlisted in the Army and was a Korean War veteran. He served in Korea as a translator with the Greek forces because of his Greek family background. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad when he returned to Altoona. Nick married Sally Brady now deceased, in Sarasota, FL. and surviving are three sons: Andy, David (Stefanie) and Robert. He is also survived by a granddaughter, Nichole, a brother, Bob, (Ruth) in Altoona, and a very caring niece, Barbara Gwen Price and many other nieces and nephews. Nick is also survived by his longtime friend and companion Jenny Miller and her children, Kerry, Holly and Brandon. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Ted and George.
Nick worked for an air conditioning business as they establish their family in Philippi Gardens in the early sixties. After attending a technical school, he opened his own business Mastos Heating and Air Conditioning. Nick also opened the Original Hot Diggity Dog restaurant in 1970 after Nick and wife Sally created a special Coney sauce recipe. He opened two more restaurants in Bradenton and Venice. The restaurant on Swift Rd is still being operated by his sons. Nick later became a building inspector for the city of Sarasota for many years. Nick was respected and well known by many businessmen and entrepreneurs in a growing Sarasota, being a resident for more than sixty years. He was always very kind with a smile, a joke, or pertinent conversation for anyone he met. He will be remembered by many in the city and his friends and family for his generous and out-going personality, and his friendliness. He was handsome and always fashionably and impeccably dressed!!
A memorial celebration of life for Nick will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Rd. 72, Sarasota, on Monday, Feb. 22, 10:30 am.
