Janice June Grossman (né e Perlman), 80, of Sarasota, Florida passed away April 2, 2026, with her family by her side. Janice is survived by her husband, Robert, of 57 years, daughter Lisa Sussman (Rob), son Jeffrey Grossman (Dana), and son Daniel Grossman (Karen), grandchildren Mallory, Zack, Jonah, Kara, Jacob, and Larissa, as well as extended family members and close friends.
Janice was born on November 17, 1945. She was predeceased by her father, Joseph Perlman and mother, Alice Perlman (né e Knapp), and her older brother, Martin Perlman. She grew up in Union, New Jersey, where she cultivated her musical skills and talents as well as her love of sports (Let’s Go Mets!) and various card games. She graduated from Union High School where she played cello and softball and was nicknamed “Peanuts” by her teammates and friends. Thereafter, Janice graduated from Montclair State University with a B.A. in Education wherein she earned a scholarship for cello as her main instrument, and became certified as a string instrument teacher.
Janice met Bob, and they married on her 23rd birthday. They settled and raised their family in Hillsborough, New Jersey. Janice became involved at Temple Beth El and enjoyed playing tennis and golf, entertaining and cooking for friends and family, volunteering, coaching Lisa’s softball team, and knitting sweaters and blankets for all family members. She was a fast and accurate typist while transcribing for Bob, and she taught private cello lessons and played music professionally with her Concorde Trio. Once her children were in school full time, Janice became the string instrument teacher and orchestra conductor for the Metuchen, New Jersey school system.
In her thirties, Janice was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). She handled this challenge with grace and grit, continuing her activities and passions, lovingly caring for her grandchildren, traveling, attending concerts and theater, playing first chair cello with the Westminster Community Orchestra and with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Side-By-Side with the Pros program, and maintaining relationships with family and friends. One special memory is Janice playing the sacred Kol Nidre solo on cello at many Kol Nidre services at Temple Beth El and other synagogues.
After snowbirding in Sarasota, Florida for six years, Janice and Bob relocated there in 2018. Janice quickly became involved and well-loved in their new community. In her later years, Janice avidly kept up with current and sporting events, crossword puzzles, sudoku, reading, and the goings-ons of her children, grandchildren and other loved ones, all with enthusiasm and loving support.
Janice shared a beautiful marriage with Bob, filled with love, compassion, laughter, and many adventures and milestones. She was immensely proud of her children, grandchildren, and their many accomplishments, instilling beautiful memories and passing on her positive traits and talents. Janice had deep and unique relationships with each of her children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends. Her love of sports, music, food, literature, and so much more continues on through her family and friends. She touched many lives as a music teacher and performer, and many of her children and grandchildren embraced her love of musical pursuits. Beloved by many, Janice’s kindness and generosity made those around her all feel loved and special.
A private inurnment will be held at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Woodbridge, New Jersey at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Janice’s name to MS4MS.org. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Tidewell Hospice of Sarasota for their loving care of Janice and her family.
