Harry Barnoff
Barnoff, Harry J. Barnoff, age 93. Beloved father of Betty Barnoff Boyer (husband David) and Susanne Holloway (husband Dave); cherished grandfather of Stephanie Lauden (ex Jon) ; great grandfather of Anna Lauden; Papa to Sara Boyer, Samantha Joseph (husband Karrrel). Beloved adopted Papa to many. Preceded in death by former spouse Betty L. Barnoff.
Harry had a passion and gift for music from early age and spent his life as a musician and teacher always caring much for others. Harry began playing string bass under George Szell with the Cleveland Orchestra in 1952. Before beginning this position, he played double bass in the Army Ground Forces band, the Erie Symphony Orchestra, Youngstown Symphony and New York City Opera Orchestra. He had scholarships and attended both Juilliard and the Cleveland Institute of Music.
He believed in giving back and leaving a legacy with his whole heart. His teaching spanned many years: 40 years at both Cleveland State University, and the Cleveland Music School Settlement, 5 years at Case Western Reserve University, 4 years at Hiram College, 5 years at the Cleveland Institute of Music, 5 years at Holy Rosary School, 5 years at the Cleveland Board of Education Supplementary Education Center. He also taught privately and had taught at Curriers Music Center, Sam Patties and Allegro Music Academy. He was not afraid to take inexperienced students and many of his students went on to play in fine orchestras. He also acted as Vice Chairman of the Cleveland Orchestra Committee 1970-71 during one of the most difficult times in the Orchestra, was the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians Rep. in 1971-1973 and also in 1978. He was treasurer of ICSOM in 1971 -1972. Harry is also the real life teacher of the gifted Nathaniel Ayers (Soloist).
He will be remembered with warmth and love for many years. He had the gift of encouragement and great personal determination and strength. He had a steady burning faith and a belief in mankind that brought out the best in everyone he knew.
