Gary Lee Baker, age 80, left this world suddenly and unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 21, 2022 just before 8:00 a.m. He had a weak heart and probable, undiagnosed colorectal cancer.
Gary was born June 25, 1942 in Columbus, Ohio to Carl and Betty Jane Baker. He married his friend and love, Susie, on July 4, 1982 after a 2 year courtship. Sue was an instant and integral part of the family. They celebrated 40 years of marriage this past July.
Gary had a full and beautiful life. He enjoyed the times when the entire family was together, and he worked diligently to make sure we stayed connected. There were many gatherings and celebrations because of his efforts. From the epic Christmas parties with great food, spirits, and music, to the summer BBQs and swim gatherings, to boating and camping at Alum Creek. Then there was Gary’s love for gardening. Through blood, sweat (lots of sweat) and tears, he grew and harvested the most amazing food to share with us all. He was very proud of his ever-growing garden. He enjoyed new experiences, including travel and shows. All who know and loved Gary, knew he was an avid sports fan, but his first love will always be the Ohio State Buckeyes!
The love for his grandbabies was very evident. Gary teased them with the clacking of his false teeth, instigated wrapping paper tube wars, made sure Christmas gifts were plentiful, and he attended their various events. There was so much abundance and joy in his life. He was appropriately and totally smitten!
There was no lack in friendships either. Gary had treasured friends who spent time with him in long conversations, storytelling, laughter, enjoying a cold beer and a cigarette. Gary was a great cook, a remarkable cartoonist, and a CNN addict with a sincere distaste for Trump!
His life was filled with adventure, love, trials, and too many blessings to put onto paper.
What mattered most to Gary, was abundance of family and he had that from the beginning until the end.
Gary was preceded in death by mother and father Carl and Betty Jane Baker, Stepfather John Gugliemotto, daughter Tracy Newell, Grandson Michael Riddle, Granddaughters Mackenzie Salmon, Hali Newell, and Taylor Brewster.
Gary is survived by his wife Susie, brothers Jim Baker and John Gugliemotto; daughters Tammy Houston/Anthony, Toni Baker, Terri Maulik/Mitch, Brandy Moore/Scott, Willie Owens/Marie, Carrie Baker; grandchildren Danielle, Deanna, Kaylee, Joey, Abby, Ally, Ike, Samantha, Phoebe, and Chloe; 6 great grandchildren and a baby boy on his way.
His life and legacy will live on in his family. Gary will be forever loved and always remembered. Thank you for creating us.
