David Millard Sloan (“Quint”) 73, passed away on May 8th, 2026, in his home in Sarasota, Florida, after a courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
He was born on May 7, 1953, in Bryn Mawr, a Philadelphia suburb in Pennsylvania.
He went to high school in Moore Park, England, where, at 16, he sustained a serious back injury in a motorcycle accident, and then once back in the U.S., he graduated in Memphis, Tennessee.
David graduated from University of Florida in 1975, with a bachelors degree in Agricultural Biology. He went on to pursue his masters at University of Tennessee, where he developed a lifelong moral stance against pesticides and contaminants - way ahead of the curve on this issue.
David lived most of his adult life in Knoxville, Tennessee and Sarasota, Florida.
He was a staunch supporter of the public airwaves and faithful contributor to PBS, and radio stations: WMNF Tampa, and Sarasota's own WSLR.
David never lost that ageless love for all animals, rescuing dogs and turtles that others turned away. He'll be remembered for his warm, playful nature, quick wit, rock music trivia knowledge, and irreverent humor.
He was a beloved caretaker to his mother, Dorothy Frances Sloan (April 4, 1924 - Dec 30, 2016) until her passing, and never stopped advocating for the caretaking and special needs communities.
David was pre-deceased by his father, Millard Fillmore Sloan (January 28, 1911- August 4, 2000), little sister, Sandra Jean Sloan (Sept 3, 1955 - July 3, 2006); as well as an infant brother, Robert Allen Sloan, who died of SIDS at a few days old.
He is survived by his wife, Kim Sobbe, his niece, Katey Cox, nephew, Zack Cox, sister, Barbara Sloan Cox, his cousins, Marybeth and Melinda McGinty, and many friends; all of whom wish to thank the tireless workers with Tidewell Hospice, compassionately caring for David in his final hours.
Donations in David "Quint" Sloan's name can be made to WSLR and WMNF radio stations, and Tidewell Hospice.
