Catherine Miller Place, better known as Cathy, passed away on December 23, 2025, at 82 years old at Tidewell Hospice House in Sarasota FL after a months long battle with cancer.
Cathy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend and is lovingly remembered by her husband of 44 years Donald Place of Sarasota, her son Lawrence “Chip” Ross and wife Kimberly of Ottawa, granddaughters Courtney and Lauren and her expansive Miller family. She was predeceased by her mother and father and her brother Charlie.
She moved around several times throughout her life, growing up in Pennsylvania, and later living in Massachusetts, Florida, Virginia, back to Massachusetts, then to Vermont and finally back to Florida, to enjoy the warm climate.
While she had many friends and family in many places, she will be most remembered for her kindness and selflessness when it came to others. After surviving breast cancer twice, she volunteered at the cancer center near her home to help others get through their cancer journeys. She loved horses and her dogs as well, learning to ride later in her life and owning two horses, Tanyon and then Poe, who were very important to her. Beyond that, her grandchildren hold fond memories of times spent baking with her, listening to her stories, and turning to her for advice in good times and bad.
Her life on earth was marked by her love, compassion, and care for her family and community, and her passing has left a hole in the hearts of those who have come to know her. Cathy always believed that she would wind up where God wanted her and the amazing care she received throughout her final months only affirmed this for her. She passed peacefully, knowing it was her time and that God, her brother, her dogs, and many more friends and family would be there to meet her on the other side.
She will be remembered in accordance with her final wishes with cremation and a private interment with her immediate family. If you wish to honor Cathy, donations in her memory to Tidwell Foundation Hospice House on Rand Blvd in Sarasota, who took such careful care with her in her final days would be appreciated. She remains forever loved, and forever in our hearts.
